The light, life and textures of the contemporary Mumbai working class are being explored and celebrated by the writer/director Paial Capadia, who won the Grand Prize at this year’s Cannes Film Festival for his debut of revealing fiction. Centering on two roommates who also work together at the Medicine City Hospital Prabha (Kani Kusruti) and an recent rent of Anu (Wild Prabha) -Plus their colleague, Cook Parvati (Huya Kadam), the movie of Capadia is illuminated at times of Connection and heartache, hope and disappointment. Prabha, her husband, from an agreed marriage, living in distant Germany, is courted by a doctor at his hospital; Anu wears a romance with a Muslim man who must keep a secret from her strict Hindu family; Parvati turns out to be engaged in a sudden expulsion from his apartment. Capadia captures the commotion of the metropolis and the serenity of the outdoor of a seaside village with the same glow, articulated by its superb actresses and the camera with lyrical naturalism, which occasionally focuses on the dream incident. All we imagine as light is a mental study of the transformative power of friendship and nursing, in all its complexities and wealth.
